Player’s replica of The Open championship trophy sells for $600 million

A replica of Gary Player’s (South Africa) 1974 British Open (The Open) trophy, the Claret Jug, has sold for more than $600 million on an auction site.

Player’s Claret Jug fetched $481,668 (about 660 million won) at auction site Golden Age Golf Auctions, Golf Digest reported on Jan. 31.

The starting bid was $5,000, but after 39 bids and 11 days of auctioning, it sold for a high price.

The auction site did not disclose the names of the buyer and seller.

The player kept the authentic Claret Jug for a year after winning the British Open 50 years ago before returning it to the R&A, which organizes the tournament.

Years later, the R&A allowed surviving winners of the tournament to have replica Claret Jugs made, and the trophy auctioned here is one of them.

“This particular 50-centimeter-high trophy (90 percent of the original size) was displayed at the player’s golf course design firm for many years, and was freshly engraved with the names of the champions until 2006, making it extremely rare,” the auction house said. 안전놀이터
