‘Prime 23’ Hyundai Mobis defeats Jung Kwan-jang to reach KBL Cup quarterfinals

Professional basketball team Ulsan Hyundai Mobis has advanced to the quarterfinals of the KBL Cup after defeating defending champion Anyang Jungkwanjang.

The Hyundai Mobis defeated Jeong Kwanjang 100-82 in Group D of the 2023 MG SaeMaeGogo KBL Cup at Wolmyeong Gymnasium in Gunsan on Nov. 11.

In the tournament, two or three teams play in a group and then the top four teams in each group advance to determine the winner.

In Group D, there were only two teams, Jungkwanjang and Hyundai Mobis, so two head-to-head matches decided who would advance to the quarterfinals.

After losing the first game on the 9th, Hyundai Mobis won today to level the two teams at 1-1 with a total of two wins, with Jung Kwanjang winning the first game by seven points (91-84) and Hyundai Mobis winning the second game by 18 points to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.

Gage Prim, who continues to play for Hyundai Mobis from last season, had 23 points and six rebounds, newcomer Kebe Aluma had 20 points and six rebounds, and veteran Ham Ji-hoon added 12 points.

For Jung Kwan-jang, Park Ji-hoon had 22 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.

Hyundai Mobis, who needed to win by at least eight points on the day to advance to the quarterfinals, jumped out to an early lead with a quick offense. They jumped out to a 29-17 lead in the first quarter thanks to Prim’s 10 points and four rebounds, as well as a trio of three-pointers.

Hyundai Mobis went up by more than 20 points (40-19) in the middle of the second quarter, but Jung Kwan-jang, with the presence of Park Ji-hoon, closed the gap to 40-52 at halftime.

The gap remained within 10 points in the second half before Jeong Kwan-jang pulled within six points, 66-72, with 1:28 left in the third quarter to get within striking distance of advancing to the quarterfinals, but could not get over the hump.

Earlier in Group B, Changwon LG defeated Daegu KOGAS 97-85 to secure their first win of the tournament.

In Group B, which consisted of LG, Busan KCC, and KOGAS, LG and KCC won one game apiece, leaving them to face each other on the 13th, while KOGAS lost both to KCC and LG to be eliminated with a two-game sweep.

With key guard Lee Jae-do and free agent forward Yang Hong-seok both out with injuries, LG got solid performances from Jung Hee-jae with 먹튀검증 18 points, Asem Marei with 16 points and seven rebounds, Dante Cunningham with 15 points, and Lee Kwan-hee with 14 points.

Rookie Yoo Yoo-sang, the third overall pick in the draft, added six points and two assists in his first game in an LG uniform.

Anthony Moss led GAS with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
