Defending professional baseball champion LG Twins defeated SSG Landers and maintained their ‘50% winning percentage’.
In the home game against SSG in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League held at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on the 8th, LG effectively took advantage of the gaps in the opponent’s battery and won 8-5.
5th place LG recorded 19 wins, 18 losses, 2 draws, and broke a 3-game losing streak, narrowing the gap with 4th place SSG to one game.
LG got off to a tough start with starter Casey Kelly getting hit early in the game.
Kelly hit a three-run home run to left field by Guillermo Heredia in the top of the first inning with one out and runners on first and second base.
LG made up one run in the bottom of the first inning with consecutive hits by Seong-ju Moon and Hyun-soo Kim, but was tied up by SSG starter Won-seok Oh until the fourth inning.
Kelly gave up an additional run in the top of the 5th inning. A pitch hit to Jo Hyeong-woo, a left-field hit to Choi Ji-hoon, and a sacrifice bunt to Park Seong-han put the team on second and third base with one out, before hitting Choi Jeong with a timely double with two RBIs to the left of left field.
The game changed drastically due to Oh Won-seok’s sudden loss of control.
In the bottom of the 5th inning when LG was down 1-5, Oh Ji-hwan and Koo Bon-hyuk hit balls to the body and Hong Chang-gi got a walk, taking the bases loaded with one out. The follow-up hitter, Moon Seong-joo, hit a high fastball to the right-center field and connected with a timely triple to make it 4-5. made.
Afterwards, Oh Won-seok threw a wild pitch, and Moon Seong-ju hit home to tie the score at 5-5.
The SSG battery was shaken even in the bottom of the 6th inning. LG Moon Bo-kyung got a walk from Oh Won-seok, and Kim Beom-seok hit a left-field hit against replaced pitcher Lee Ro-woon, putting him in scoring position with one out and third base.
Kim Beom-seok seemed to have poured cold water on his team as he was thrown out while running to second base, but the follow-up hitter, Oh Ji-hwan, got a walk and saved the mood.
Afterwards, SSG catcher Cho Hyung-woo threw Lee Ro-woon’s breaking ball backwards, and LG turned the score around 6-5.
In the ensuing game with one out and runners on third base, Park Dong-won hit a sacrifice hit to right field to get away with one more run.
LG also scored a lucky score in the 7th inning. SSG Seo Jin-yong’s poor pitch control resulted in two walks and an intentional walk, giving the team a chance to load the bases with one out, and then Kim Beom-seok hit a timely infield hit that hit the pitcher’s body and flowed toward the shortstop, making it 8-5.
