Ryu Hyun-jin won’t make start against Tampa Bay on Oct. 30, Kikuchi out

Allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay on April 24.

The Toronto Blue Jays have postponed the start of Hyun-jin Ryu (36).

Instead of Hyun-jin Ryu, Toronto will start Yusei Kikuchi against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 30 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

It was Ryu’s turn in the starting rotation, but Kikuchi will pitch first. Kikuchi, who will take the mound on four days’ rest, will face Aaron Seabail.

Toronto hasn’t announced its starting pitcher for next month’s game against Tampa Bay, but it’s likely that Ryu will get the nod. Ryu and Kikuchi appear to be in the same starting order.

Ryu, who underwent elbow ligament splicing surgery last year, made his comeback in early August after about 14 months out. In 10 appearances this season, he has thrown 49 innings, going 3-3 with a 3.31 ERA.

He faced Tampa Bay for the first time this season in his last start and struggled mightily. On April 24, he gave up five runs on seven hits (three homers) and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Tonight’s start against Tampa Bay is a chance for Ryu to bounce back.

This could be Hyun-jin Ryu’s last start in a Toronto uniform. Toronto is close to securing a spot in fall baseball but hasn’t confirmed it yet, and even if they do make the postseason, it’s unclear if Ryu will pitch.

Ryu’s four-year contract with Toronto ends after this season and he will be eligible for free agency. 19가이드03
